One of the interesting things about any business trip for me is the 45 min taxi ride to the airport. More often than not, the punjabi taxi drivers never disappoint with their "expert comments". Here is an unadulterated transcript of the chat I had on my way to SFO a week back.
Me: Since when are you in the bay area?
TD (taxi driver, 57 yr old): o ji, 16 years. US Citizen hoon ji. Aap? (For the last 16 years. I am a US citizen)
Me: main citizen nahi hoon :) (I am not one)
TD (randomly): o ji, kitne bacche hain ji aapke (how many kids do you have?)
Me (LOL-ing): Do I look that old? I am not married yet.
TD: nahi ji ho to aap jawaan..jawaani mein shaadi nahi karoge to budhaape mein karoge? (you dont look that old..but you should marry while you are still young)
Me: Shaadi karne layak koi mili nahi. (Haven't found the match yet.)
TD: O ji to fir akele kaise sote ho rajaai mein.. thand nahi lagti? (how do you sleep alone then..dont you feel cold)
Me: hahahaha..
TD: girlfriend to hogi ji?
Me: haha .., sardarji, aise hi kisi ko muh uthaa ke shaadi kar loon? (i cant just marry someone randomly)
TD: o ji, jaan pehchaan to hoti rahegi, pehle shaadi to karo. (first get married, then you ll get to know her)
TD: meri shaadi hui maine apni biwi ko shaadi ke pehle kabhi nahi dekha (I never saw or talked to my wife before we got married)
Me: that was a different age sardarji
TD: o kuch different nahi ji.. sab wahi hai. Kisi seedhi saadhi indian se shaadi karo. Roti shoti banaayegi aapke liye. (Its still the same. Find a simple decent indian girl and get married. She will cook for you everyday)
(By now, I had started to realize the apparent high entertainment quotient of TD's utterances. So I was just nodding in agreement and laughing instead of having an intelligible discussion)
TD: next time jab india jaaoge, khaali haath waapas mat aana..muh mat dikhaana..kisi gori se mat karna shaadi (dont come back empty handed the next time you go to india. Don't marry an American or non-indian).
Me: why not?
TD: kya baat kar rahe ho. aap kisi aisi ladki se shaadi karoge jiska boyfraand raha ho? :o (how can you marry someone who had a boyfriend before?)
(This line was a killer. TD sure lives in an archaic age.. and he called himself an american citizen.A "LOL++" moment)
Me: Even an Indian girl can have a boyfriend.
TD: haanji but chance kam hai...goriyon ka to confirmed hai...kyun riks loge (Yes, but the probability is lower than that for an american.. why take a risk?)
(I was laughing too hard to reply back)

TD: Maninder Singh hoon ji. (I am Maninder Singh)
While on one hand it was good to have a great laugh, on the other it was a sorry statement on someone who was physically living in the US for 16 years but mentally still in the 18th century.

But surely his views aren't from the 18th century! His theories would have been pretty accurate (outside of the major metros) for when he immigrated to the US. (early 90's)
The poor guy is probably only guilty of not knowing about what his daughter is doing with her friends at desi parties out in the Easy Bay. :D
ITG: sure such chains of thought is quite common in smaller towns in india..but he very proudly said "US citizen hoon ji"..that made his utterances even funnier :D
Stuff like that makes me sad. One could say that this taxi-walla could be excused since he probably wasn't very well educated. I had a South Indian prof at a west coast university who had been in the US close to 25 years. He was such a bigot - like not talking to the non-Brahmin desi students, but inviting the brahmin ones to dinner all the time.
