Stats can be misleading, some say. In some cases, true. But vagueness is tantamount to stupidity. So lets get rid of the misleading-ness for once and for all by approaching the stats using different levels of resolution, so to speak.
Allegation: Sachin is a big flop when it comes to finals
Facts: With an average of 55.54, he ranks 4th on the all-time average list in tournament finals..only marginally behind Sir Viv Richards (55.74).
Some noteable averages in the finals:
Ricky Ponting: 39.52
Adam Gilchrist: 37.51
Rahul Dravid: 34.71
Steve Waugh: 29.53
But one could argue that averages can be misleading especially if you have a lot of unbeaten knocks (Sachin has just 3 unbeaten centuries.. out of 38 knocks)
Lets zoom in further. Of the 38 finals that Sachin has played, he has failed in 15 of those (assuming any score less than 40 = failure). That is roughly 39.5% failure rate. .
Failure rates for other prominent "big match" players in the finals
Ricky Ponting 50% (20/39)
Steve Waugh: 62.5%
Adam Gilchrist: 63.6% (21/33)
Rahul Dravid: 76% (16/21)
Viv Richards: 41%.
And I haven't even taken into account the non-quantifiable pressure like that from the Indian fans.
I rest my case.

Solid Research..
BTW, the name of Rahul Dravid alongwith with the likes of One-day immortals as Ponting, tendulkar and glichrist is a bit surprising..
