Watched this movie - Khuda ke liye - yesterday. For the uninitiated, it's a movie set primarily in Pakistan showcasing 2 sides of Islam, the 'real' version and the Maulana version, and how it impacts the life of a Pakistani guy who is studying music in USA, and of a British national of Pakistani origin who finds herself entrapped by the Maulana version of Islam.
A well-made movie that treats the subject matter with great sensitivity that it deserves, except for one thing. The first-time director possibly relishes in India bashing (or he did that to gain mass appeal). There was no reason for a character who is shown as a moderate Muslim to say things like "We ruled them (India) for 1000 years" and "We built Taj" apparently refering to a Shah Jahan (a Muslim) as "we". Very off the character, and I must say, not in good taste.
That glitch aside, the movie had its soul in the right place. I am not going to review the movie here but just think aloud on the bigger picture. Who do we hold responsible and attribute all this to? To the Maulanas that drive the youth to such distorted 'jehad' or to lack of education that makes them so bereft of logic? To the poverty that drives some of the youth to commit terrorist acts or to the CIA that first created Mujahideen when it suited them and the abandoned them to rot in poverty? To the situations that drove them to justify everything based on religion or to the religion itself?
I see religion as more of a map. Yahoo or google or mapquest, is secondary. The primary purpose is to give direction. I am not overly religious, but I find Bhagvad Geeta as the most powerful piece of philosophy that is more of a guide towards leading a peaceful life than a religious diction. In short, it is Fountainhead and Rudyard Kipling's 'If' merged together. It's like a google map..just a guide. I am sure the same is true for other religions. If so, back to the original question: Who do we hold responsible then?

"to lack of education that makes them so bereft of logic"
What I like about the movie is that they show the younger brother, a liberally raised, educated boy, turn into a fundamentalist after being drawn by the arguments of the Maulana, showing that education and a worldly life doesn't always make one logical. Some people are just not smart enough to understand good logic! (7 years of interacting with educated people in Southern US taught me that.)
I think the only solution to terrorism is to breed consumeristic societies in such areas to where people are too busy with their jobs and loans to worry about going on a jihad. Unfortunately, the terrorist groups are well aware of and hence oppose any such effort wholeheartedly!
or maybe it's the aimlessness or too much boredom that's making them resort to this mullah version of jihaad.
