Home Minister Shivraj Patil is inching towards becoming the most inept home minister of all time. He has started to sound as repetitive and as cringe-inducing as Himesh Reshamiya. In an interview post-serial blasts in Delhi, he said that the ministry had intelligence information about a possible attack in the major metros in India and that it was difficult to know when and where the terrorists would strike. I wonder if he really meant that. No semblance of determinism and bloodimindedness from a person who is supposed to protect the citizens of the country.
If someone attacks your home, you would make sure you do no give up without putting up a fight. You would have that bloodimindedness to take them head on. Replace "someone" by a "terrorist", your home by "India", and you by "Mr Patil" and the equation goes bust. He lacks this bloodimindedness.
I fail to understand why was there no red alert in any of the cities despite the intelligence info and why was there no extra-deployment of forces at the various checkpoints in and out of the city.. why no beefing up of security at crowded locations? Would that prevent the strike? Maybe not. But there is a thing called deterrence. A terrorist comes from outside, plants a bomb in a trash can in the heart of the capital (Connaught Place) and other such crowded places, and the government has no clue? THIS despite the tip-off. Immense surprise.
Sadly, this is what happens when there is no accountability. Irrespective of how many lives are lost, no one is held accountable. None. Zilch. Why would someone whose career progress has got nothing to do with his performance work that extra bit to be true to his job? Twice at IGI airport, I have gone past the security without the officials even caring to scan my carry bag. Their job didnt depend on whether I had a bomb in my bag. Their job is a given, unconditionally. There is no one person to be blamed. This whole mess is complicated. At the end of the day, politicians work for their own welfare. That is exactly why the ruling Congress party is wary of hanging a terrorist convicted by the Supreme Court. Reason? Political repercussions. Imagine how safe is a country where a terrorist, despite being convicted of committing heinous crimes, is not punished due to political reasons. Similarly, PDP in Kashmir wouldnt say a word in favor of the Amarnath Shrine Board fearing a backlash from its Muslim voters. Samajwadi Party wouldnt hesitate to give a clean-chit to SIMI to win over Muslim votes. This is no deterrence. This is politics. If the intent is not right, any reason for hope goes away. What a shame!
Blood boils.
That brings another question. Should security be semi-privatized by the government? Atleast as a supplement to the existing system, esp during red-alerts? Atleast the security guys would be more diligent because any dereliction of duty would spell doom for them. I genuinely hope some sort of reforms are brought into place to replace government's ineptitude.
Till then, stay safe.

he said that the ministry had intelligence information about a possible attack in the major metros in India and that it was difficult to know when and where the terrorists would strike.****Let me give you the technical aspect of this statement. The problem is since last 5-6 years almost all state governments have completely ruined the detection staff in the local police force giving various reasons such as unavailability of enough force, VIP security, etc, etc. As a result of that whenever IB sends any information to the Central Home ministry and it forwards it to the concerned states, each time those states are caught either sleeping or clueless, coz the crime information network is no longer sound as it used to be.
I fail to understand why was there no red alert in any of the cities despite the intelligence info and why was there no extra-deployment of forces at the various checkpoints in and out of the city..***They did, yet like i said above terrrists dont pose r roam ard as you see in the movies, in reality they r like u and me, so its very necessary to get that crime detection and information network back on feet or else in a country like India one can literally deliver mayhem.
Should security be semi-privatized by the government? Atleast as a supplement to the existing system, esp during red-alerts? Atleast the security guys would be more diligent because any dereliction of duty would spell doom for them.*****Dont blame u for that thought, but with my personal experience in India and various other countries they turn out nothing more than just dumb meatballs, hv seen their work in countries like USA, Australia, Germany,India, Philipines, Indonesia, etc, etc, etc...Infact a common person on the street is more helpfull, if everyone keeps their eyes and ears open and report to anything's that suspicious small or big, gradually the administration can bring down these incidents.
Fact of the matter is, its the ppl who join force shud take more pride and responsibility in their job. Half of them dont even carry on for more than 2-3 years these days. All the recent retired IB chiefs have been yelling to get back the networking back on feet on the state and city level, but none of the fuckin existing cops want to take the detection force, coz it cuts ur direct authority with the public and cuts ur extra income...Its a very very vicious cycle...u say its a good idea to get the pvt security for such jobs, i say if every cop starts following the things which r imparted during the training, i can bet that u cant get away snatching even somebody's handky for more than an hour.
kesariya: i am fine.. and ya i am due for a post on BUF.
rajbir bhai: point takent.. but the problem is it is difficult to find it is difficult to motivate the government machinery (like police etc) to act unless they are held accountable for their jobs. sarkaari naukri is a synonym for life-long guarantee. THAT complacency is the problem. true, there are exceptions like you very passionate about their job but they form a small minority. One thing that privatisation reigns in is the message of perform or perish. So people who are responsible for saving lives (right from top cadre to bottom) "act". Private security wont have a special tag or something.. it is just that their mindset wouldnt be one of complacency.
Law enforcement as a term, as a commodity and as a service is a very sacred thing for the society and the country and unless u hv ppl who really understand the meaning of it, u can never get results, may it be run by the govt or pvt. sector coz in the pvt sector at the most what can u do, fire?, but the fact of the matter is the ppl heading such depts hv to be good enough to identify ppl who really know how to digest the power of enforcement and do the work efficiently.
What's even more disturbing is the lack of concern among ppl...not that they don't fear for their lives but the ease with which they just get on with their lives after tragedy strikes...others.
Be it after the bombings...the Bihar floods...
sometimes more than apathy, it seems to be a sense of immunity...of emotions simply drying out...resigned to a sense of helplessness...
when a bunch of people come to the heart of your capital city, kill your people and dare you to catch them if you can and you sit helpless, thinking who and where might be the next...yes the "blood boils". and you are scared too...what exactly is the value of your life? some lakhs of rupees paid as compensation to those who survive you? yes the "blood boils"... the fact that they are still roaming around, indians this time, no "foreign hand", polluting the minds of more and more people to join them... it is spine-chilling.
