(to understand whatever I write in this post, you need to watch Big Boss - 2)
Despite the busy schedule that I am in, I have tried to see on and off some of the episodes of the second season of Big Boss - an indian version of the Big Brother series. This is the first time I am watching this series. I used to think it would be a waste of time with large doses of typical mindless drama that TV channels use to boost their TRPs. True, it has tonns of drama. But it has glued me not b/c of the drama. I am fascinated by how humans - as normal as you and I - would behave and intermingle when put together in a house as strangers. They are all celebrities - except a few - but they are all displaying normal frailties and insecurities of a common man. It also reinforces Maslow's need theory. When it comes to survival, people wont mind resorting to anything to stay afloat. Fun.
For me, it is starting to feel like real life with cameras on. I can draw a lot of parallels in the way the housemates behave and the manner in which some of the insecure people that I see around me behave. The intensity of politics in real life may not be that much b/c there is only one 'elimination' in real life which fortunately is not pre-determined by the so-called 'housemates'. That said, if, in real life, cameras were to be installed all over on a bigger scale, the soundbites captured wouldnt, in essence, be any different from what is seen in the big boss house.
Although I have known and worked with a lot of people from different countries and backgrounds, I still find it fascinating to observe the way humans behave and the underlying reason behind that. Also, the first impression can be very deceptive. Take for example, Sambhavna. I just adored her in the first episode. Charming, chirpy and all that. With every episode since then, she has displayed all such traits that are, for me, complete turn-offs. Insecurity, bitchiness, backbiting and such. As a sidenote: the business model of this series is such that neutral minglers and people with less opinions would have the least chance to get nominated for elimination. But once nominated, the 'stronger' personalities would most likely get more votes since they generally tend to have a dedicated fan-base. This is what makes the format interesting.
I have not been able to watch every episode but I ll make sure I do. Not just because of the drama. Not just to see who gets eliminated next. But also to get that kick out of seeing people scheming, manipulating, chameleoning. All for just one reason. To survive.
ps: talking of Maslow's survival needs: what is happening in Bihar is more grave.

I hate reality shows...Big Brother was enough the first time ard and I cant u'stand how it survived for 4 or 5 consecutive years! r the majority of ppl that dumb?
**When it comes to survival, people wont mind resorting to anything to stay afloat. Fun.
that I agree with somehow :)
btw why didnt u collect ur award?
:(
Keshi.
I think reality shows are a perversion of the modern world; they are some sort of a postmodern vice. However, sometimes I like to watch 'em.
:X
Arrey mai abhi kuchh din pehle ek reality show dekh raha tha, some ticket to bollywood karke...khule aam ladkiyo ko gaaliya dena, camera ke saamne maarpit karna, agar to woh sab scripted hai to producer ko public ke beech dhona chaiye aur to agar woh sach me ladh rahe hai to turant band karwa dena chaiyye gutterchhaap serial ko.
kesariya: i accept your award with all humility :D thanks.
bla: most reality shows are scripted.. but somehow this big boss seems like a sting operation and very real.
rajbir bhai: haha..ye to kabhi sune nahi hain..sahi mein aisa hai to patak patak ke kootna chahiye (for keshi's understanding: if producers really indulge in such cheap reality-shows, they should be beaten black n blue a true 'mard' ;)
Bhai sune to hum bhi nahi the, par news mein dekhato pehle to vishwas hi nahi hua ki aisa bhi koi serial ho sakta hai. Pehle ek lady anchor participant ko tappad lagati hai, fir woh usse bhi jordaar jadhta hai...aur fir pura unit kamse kam 50-60 jan usko dhoke sukne chhod deti hai...:) fir ek serial tha usme har dusra participant khule-aam ma-behan ki gaaliya nikal raha hai, industrywaalo ko gaaliya nikalta hai aur fir maar khaake chupchaap baith jaata hai...dekhe the kabhi aise ghatiya log tv pe ya aise ghatiya serials?:)
Hey, so we got off to a confused/awkward start and i wouldn't like it to be that way as i like reading the blog, so i want'd to say 'hello' and throw the awkwardness out the window and comment so here it is;
I wanted to know ur side do u find that first impressions are the lasting impressions or does it take a few meetings for u to form an impression..i started to wonder this as u said it maybe deceptive so do u find, going by experience that we shouldn't form an impression in a first meeting?
also i think these shows are reflective of us in everyday life only as u said it's glamourised and interfered with to boost TRP's which is the prime motive rather than documenting human nature...
kaya: welcome back. as for me, i dont pass value judgement anyone hastily..but with experience i have realised that my 'opinion' on a person after a couple of meetings tends to be quite closer to the reality. it works differently for everyone. i am one of those who somehow subconsciously susses out a person just by looking into his/her eyes. i am mostly right, if not always.
how abt you?
interesting that the big brother shows seem to draw you in like that!!!
Ok I think I figured what dish you were talking about....is it puliyogare?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puliyogare
puliogare? is it really pronounced the way it is written? b/c all i could make out was **nti**nti. even today, i pull his legs about this infamous dish..and he gets mightily pissed at my pronunciation of his close-to-heart so-called dish.
