..mental bribe. Kinda. Sorta.
Motivation indicates lack of passion in the person who is being motivated. Motivation can wake you up at 3 in the morning on a black friday during Thanksgiving (if you care about saving few bucks) but it is your inner unadulterated passion that can do that everyday.
Example: I love singing. Passionately. With whatever untrained imperfect voice that I have. I just love it. I dont want to dilute this passion by wanting anything in return. I dont need to *make* myself want to sing by mentally pepping myself up or offering some incentive.
On the other hand, working out (and at times even running) is more of an imposed-habit. I need to *make* myself think of how good it feels to be fit and healthy and tond-free (btw, tond = pot-belly) If I dont, inertia takes over. In short, I need to *bribe* myself. I am not inherently passionate about pumping iron although running at times (esp in bay area), is fun.
Getting me?
So if you need to motivate yourself to do something, that means you are not passionate about it. Passion comes from within. It cannot be 'bought' by incentives.
If you look around, you will find that people who are supersuccessful have one thing in common. Incentives didnt make them do what they did. They just passionately loved their *work*. Everything else followed.
